In this talk by Carl Hayden Smith we are invited to consider what it means to be human in a world where digital technology is developing at full speed. When the creative act is capable of being outsourced and externalised to our machines we ask, are we losing our senses?

Carl H S is the founder of the Museum of Consciousness and cofounder of the Cyberdelic Society, working with musicians and artists to create immersive experiences designed to alter and expand states of consciousness. He has given over 300 public lectures and is a regular speaker at Breaking Convention (Europes largest conference on psychedelic consciousness) and a key speaker at Medicine (festival UK)

We are all entwined with the internet and as it develops with the deep learning engineers feeding the AI machine more and more of our data, taking a more conscious approach to how we utilise technology is crucial for our wellbeing. Carl will explain why a more Hyperhumanist approach in relating to technology can help us transform the human condition, using technology as a catalyst for developing our own innate human abilities and skills in contrast to Transhumanism that requires us to become dependent on technology.

We will dive into the world of Cyberdelics and how we can utilise various technologies—such as virtual reality (VR), light machines, and immersive audio-visual experiences—that are created and designed to mimic the mystical states often associated with psychedelics and ancient technologies. Evoking feelings of presence, awe,transcendence and promoting introspection and emotional connection.

Let’s explore this timely subject with one of the UK’s leading psychedelic explorers. Carl H S took part in the DMTx programme -a first of a kind study to assess the effects of 5-MeO-DMT at Imperial College London, who are working alongside Kings College and UCL as global leaders in the emerging field of psychedelic research.

Bio: Carl Hayden Smith is Associate Professor of Media in the School of Arts & Creative Industries at UEL and is the former Head of Research and Director of the Learning Technology Research Centre (LTRC) at the Institute for Creativity & Technology, Ravensbourne University London. He is also co-founder of the Cyberdelics Society and founder of the Museum of Consciousness. Raising over £10 million in research funding, he has led numerous teams on large-scale international projects including Erasmus+, FP7, Horizon 2020, Innovate UK and the XPRIZE. He has 30 years’ experience conducting R+D into the application of hybrid technologies for perceptual, cognitive and creative transformation. His research focuses broadly on the relationship between technology and the human condition. Carl is developing ‘Hyperhumanism’ which reframes technology as a catalyst for developing our own innate human abilities. His other research interests include Embodied Cognition, Spatial Literacy, Context Engineering, Umwelt Hacking, Natural Media, Sensory Augmentation, Extended Senses and Embodiment. His additional projects include AR4EU (Code Reality), Hobs Academy, and Holotechnica. He has given over 300 public lectures, conference presentations and keynotes across 60 countries and published more than 50 academic papers.
