Description
A two-day workshop learning how to make printing plates with cut and patterned card. Working with scalpels and other tools, you will build up a series of plates which you can print in different combinations to tell a story or build a pattern. On completion of this course you will be welcome to join our open access Print Club sessions to continue your explorations in this diverse medium.
Tutor Flora McLachlan RE is based in West Wales where she lives on the edge of the Preseli moors and makes etchings and lithographs. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, and has a Fine Art MA from Aberystwyth University. Flora’s imagery springs out of her sense of the mythical and archetypal elements of landscape, as found in the storytelling tradition. The motif of the transformative quest in medieval romance informs her work with a sense of travelling outwards into the wild forest, and inwards into the mysteries of the self.
Please bring a sketchbook with any drawings photos and ideas, all other materials will be provided.

This course was brilliant. Flora the course leader, was an excellent tutor, very experienced in printmaking, and shared her work and techniques in such a knowledgeable and informative way, with plenty of step by step instructions. Having limited experience of printmaking, I found Flora very approachable and helpful, and found the printmaking set up at Walden Arts excellent. Collagraph printing is very accessible, using found and basic materials with amazing results… I was even able to do a few extra plates at home and take them in to print at home. I did an etching course with Flora. Her knowledge of the technique is excellent and she is extremely experienced, working to a masterful level producing beautifully managed prints. She has great patience and is prepared to explain, not only what to do but why it is necessary to do something in a particular way. For me, the course was a great re-introduction to etching and I came out of it with a much better understanding, both of the technique and what can be achieved.
